Hi there, welcome to The Gourmet Hiker website.
There is no reason why you can’t enjoy delicious food in the outdoors.
Over the last twenty years I’ve been fortunate enough to hike many great trails across the globe, from the humid jungles of Latin America to the great snow-capped peaks of the Andes and the Himalaya, to the arid deserts of Africa and Australia and the rugged forests of the Alps and the Rockies.
In the early days, like most people embarking on adventures into the outdoors for the first time, I had little idea how to prepare a range of tasty and nutritious meals. I was focused on calories, and tended more often than not to rely on a diet of two-minute noodles, packet pasta mixes and a handful of muesli bars. Oh, and lots of chocolate!
But over the years I’ve gradually realized that it is possible to create some gourmet (some may even say decadent) meals for when you’re out on the trail. Meals that taste great needn’t take an excessive amount of time to prepare or weigh down your backpack.
The Gourmet Hiker book will provide you with ideas for how to create your own gourmet dishes on the trail. It includes essential techniques that will help you adapt your own favourite recipes to the outdoors, a discussion on the type of equipment available, the importance of menu planning, hints on what does and doesn’t seem to work in the outdoors, and a variety of recipe ideas.
It is primarily aimed at people who are keen to embark on multi-day, or even multi-week, adventures into the outdoors. The book contains tips and recipes for people who are new to preparing food in the outdoors, as well as those people who are experienced at cooking in the outdoors that are looking for some fresh inspiration.
The recipes have been created, and road tested, to align with the main theme of this book – to create high quality, delicious meals in the outdoors without compromising the weight of your backpack.
